We had not heard from T in two weeks. The fear came again as we could not help thinking of how fragile the lives of innocent civilians are when they are caught within the cycle of political violence.
I am very happy to have your e mail, such a nice touch of you to ask about
us, it just brought to me very beautiful memories of our meeting in jordan and
drew in my mind your kind and warm smile, since then we haven't seen many happy
Fortunately I am still alive and my family, now I am a father of a lovely
16 months daughter "L" she is our only source of hope and joy, we are
living in a very drastic condition, in the middle of a low grade civil war with
great sectarian tension and hatred. As a doctor I am witnessing the last breaths
of medicine in Iraq as many of our seniors and fellow doctors go either outside the
country or under the ground. we keep ourselves hidden and unobrtrusive so the we
are not targetted by extrimist religious militias. it is unbearable life here, I
am every day nearer to the disicion of leaving however as i have a family and a
daughter I have to weigh out the consequences of unknown and non recognition , I
hope I can get a decent asyllum outside..
regarding L, he is well, now in damascus syria and try to find a
happy for all those who could manage to (go to the ) USA it is pretty hard to do.
how are you ? what is your news? how are your grand children ? I hope you
are all well because you deserve the best of all, god may rest you son's soul
and all those who were glorified with him,, after 5 years , Bush adminstration
has left the world full of agony and sorrow because of his imprudent
again I would like to express my gratitude for remembering me hoping we may
meet sonn again in a world full of love and happiness.
I was so happy to get your good
wishes. I am so sorry I missed hearing your voice on the phone. I am taking your
advice about being sad, and yes, you are so very right. Marilyn may be gone in
her body, but she is so much with us in her spirit. Remember the star that we
spoke about? One of the last things Marilyn said was that the special start you
picked will carry our love back and forth, and when Tania sees it she will feel
our love, and when we see it we will feel her love. And it is true. I feel your
love so deeply. I hope you can feel mine.
The picture is from the conference
we just held in New York. We had many people from many countries who were so
much like ourselves. They lost their family members to political violence but they
have chosen a path of peace and not a road to revenge. From right to left:
Villa, Uncle Bruce, and María Jesús González (Irene’s
Years ago, when Irene was a child,
her mom was very active in Spanish/Basque politics. She argued that the Basque
people should have their own country, separate from Spain. There
were others who wanted the same result, but the wanted to be violent to get
their dream. The terrorists put a bomb in their car. Irene and Maria lost legs,
fingers, but not their good hearts!
Instead of wishing death upon their
attackers they moved their lives to letting people know that violence is not the
answer. Irene was only 9 at the time, but she was very wise. She has had many
painful operations to improve her condition. She continues to tell people that
even though they have been changed by violence, they can carry on and be strong.
They can still move this world. I think you can see more than my words just by
studying their smiles.
There were many other brave and
wonderful people at the conference. I told them of you and your friends. They
all send their best to you, and I send my love.
May peace come to you and yours, and
Please send my regards to you family
and a special hello to your brother.
