Noha is in Baghdad waiting to see the doctor. I am in Brooklyn waiting for my name to be called to sit on a jury. The words below are from speaking with her on the phone just an hour ago.
My sister and I were in the kitchen waiting for the water to come back. My brother wanted to go to shop for simple things but we did not let him because the neighborhood was very hot today. There was too much shooting. He listened to us and did not go out.
Then came the voice of a big bomb. Right here. All the glass on that side of the house is shattered. My sister was cut very big in her hand. A piece of glass was in my eye. There was a lot of blood. We are OK now. Really, we are OK.
The children were crying loud. I was crying. The house was crying of the shock of this bomb. Later my brother took us to the doctor. My eye will be fine. I can see. It hurts like needles and my eye is red but I can see and it will be fine. The sew my sister's hand and she will be OK. When we were in the street I could see the remains of the truck that was blown. The neighbors said that when it came near to the check point the soldiers told it to stop but it did not and when it kept going they shot the truck and it kept going and they shot more. Then the truck blew itself up. It is in many pieces. The street has blood in the front of the house.
I feel so bad for the children. They are full of fear now and the little nephew will not come from his bed. He wants only to stay with the covers. I think I want only to stay with the covers also, but now I am going to the doctor again. When I leave the house I say I love you to all who are here. It is important that they know I love them each time I go to the street. You know why?
I am in << >> Street on the way to the doctor. Do you hear that? This is the voice of a bomb. Far away. You know my neighbor lost courage today. All day we can hear her cry and shout. She is not stopping this and I think her heart is gone. You know why?
I have few words for her today. I cannot find it in myself to say, "Everything will be OK."
