To those who say, "Why does it matter where, or how, we try Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?" we say, "We must follow the rule of law and try him in a civil court."
Why? Because America is a global symbol of Democracy and if we are to build nations in our image then we must set the good example.
In response to revelations about torture at his Muthena prison, Iraq's Prime Minister Maliki stated, "...the abuses at Abu Ghraib, the American government took tough measures, and we are doing the same, so where is the problem..."
The problem is that when we act outside the law, when we bend the law for the sake of political expediency, when we break the law for convenience sake, we create excuses for abuses by the governments we support.
The trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed must be held in a civil court to show the world that we respect and follow our own rules of law.
