In an obvious move to appear strong, manly, and in charge of foreign affairs as we approach the elections, the Obama administration has leaked the news that it is arming Syrian opposition forces.
The details remain secret. Specific weapons and supplies were not leaked, nor were the identities of the recipients revealed. Just who is being armed seems rather critical, unless one's policy is merely to oust Assad at whatever the cost.
Long rumored and now confirmed by Iraq Ambassador to the U.N. Hamid al Bayati, Al Qaeda is now responsible for multiple suicide attacks in Syria that there are significant numbers of significantly influential Al Qaeda taking part in the conflict. One can only assume that Obama is relying on the U.S. intelligence services to carefully vet the flow of arms into this war zone. Hah!The very same intelligence services who brought us 'quick victory in Iraq' and 'a viable military solution in Afghanistan'. Give us a break!
Only time will tell if our 'help' does more to help than to harm. The last time we tried to help a people oust a leader...let's see...that was Iraq. Saddam, Fallujah...the result: little clean water, little electricity, widespread hunger, widows and orphans beyond counting...and, oh yes, the dead, the innocent civilians whose culture and spirit have largely been crushed.
It used to be a bumper sticker joke. It is now a sad reminder of the toll of our using violence to solve problems: Be Nice America or we will bring Democracy to your country.
Obama: Stop playing God. Stop choosing who will die. There are other paths to follow.
