The end of a day of fasting; a quiet time of reflection in a mosque, a walk to the café, a family excursion to the shops…terminated in a blast of blood and bone. Such is the manifestation of ‘religious fervor’ al-Qaeda's terrorism delivers in Iraq.
This month’s toll of 642 dead has raised the body count to over 3,000 since April. Thousands more are physically wounded, and countless are traumatized. The level of coordination, the indiscriminate targeting of innocent civilians, and presence of foreign fighters all point to al-Qaeda. Buried in the harsh statistics are political assassinations but these constitute a minor part of the carnage.
The U.S. has dragged its bloodied, defeated military out. Like a scarf in the wind the U.N. Security council has
extended its mandate to assist Iraq. They haven’t even resolved the issues left-over
from the invasion of Kuwait.
Is it time to build a wall around the Middle East? Withdraw all diplomats, cease trade and banking cooperation, reject all air and ship traffic, embargo all, close our eyes and wait? Then, when a nation achieves a suitable level of protection of the innocent civilians within its borders they will be readmitted to the family of nations, and not before.
Do you have a better idea?
